Got questions? We've got answers.

25 of the most common questions we get from tournament organizers. Still stuck? Email hello@openmatchday.com — a human reads every message.

Getting started

Can I try OpenMatchDay before buying?

Yes. Request a free 14-day trial and get full access to every feature — create a real tournament, add teams, score matches, even use the TV display. No credit card required, no auto-renew. If you decide not to continue, the trial just expires.

How fast can I actually get started?

Minutes. Our setup wizard walks you through tournament name, format, teams, schedule, and branding in six quick steps. Most organizers have their first tournament live within 5–10 minutes. For summer events, you can be ready the same day you sign up.

What sports does OpenMatchDay support?

OpenMatchDay is designed for football and futsal at every level — 5-a-side, 7-a-side, 9-a-side, 11-a-side, indoor, outdoor, youth, senior. It handles both group stages and playoff brackets (A/B finals, semi-finals, quarter-finals). Custom rules and period lengths are configurable per tournament.

Can I import teams and players from a spreadsheet?

Not yet — but manual setup is fast. The wizard’s team and player screens are designed for quick typing (tab-to-next-field, auto-advance). CSV import is on our roadmap for Q3 2026 if that would help you.

Do I need to install anything?

No. OpenMatchDay is fully web-based. It works on any modern browser — desktop, tablet, or phone. You can also install it to your phone’s home screen from the browser menu (it’s a Progressive Web App), which makes it feel like a native app.

Match day & live scoring

How does live scoring work?

Admins and referees score matches from the Command Center — a split-screen control panel that works on any device. Tap the team, tap the player, and the goal is recorded. Cards, penalties, substitutions, and match status changes work the same way. Updates reach spectators’ phones and the TV display within seconds.

Can multiple people score at the same time?

Yes. You can assign a referee to each court. Each referee scores their own match from their phone or tablet independently — the system handles concurrent updates without conflicts. The tournament admin keeps oversight from the Command Center.

What if my referees don’t have the latest phones?

OpenMatchDay works on any browser from the last 3–4 years (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). It’s mobile-first and has been designed for devices as basic as a $100 Android. If the browser runs, you can score.

What happens if the internet goes down mid-match?

Scores entered while offline are saved locally in the browser and sync the moment the connection returns. Spectators see the score update the next time their page refreshes (every 10 seconds). For venues with unreliable wifi, a mobile hotspot or 4G dongle is a good backup.

Can spectators follow on their phones?

Every tournament gets its own public URL with mobile-optimized pages. Spectators see live scores, standings, the full schedule, top scorers, and player statistics in real-time. No account, no app install, no login. Share the link on Facebook, WhatsApp, or a QR code at the venue.

What does the TV display mode do?

A full-screen kiosk view designed for venue screens, projectors, and iPads at the scoring table. Auto-rotates between live scores, standings, schedule, and feed. Configure split-view (two panes side-by-side), pick a theme, adjust font sizes, enable a scrolling announcement ticker. Drives sponsor value by keeping eyes on the screen between matches.

Standings, playoffs & stats

How are standings and tiebreakers calculated?

Standings calculate automatically: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw. Tiebreakers follow standard tournament rules: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head record, then alphabetical. Playoff advancement is automatic once the group stage finishes.

Can I run custom formats (round-robin, A/B final, knockout, etc.)?

Yes. OpenMatchDay supports round-robin groups, A-Final/B-Final, semi-finals, quarter-finals, and third-place playoffs. Configure the number of groups and the bracket structure at setup; the system draws groups by seeding and auto-advances teams.

Are top scorer stats tracked automatically?

Yes. Every goal recorded during live scoring updates the top scorers table. Assists are tracked too. Rankings, player profiles, and cross-tournament stats appear on dedicated public pages — parents and players love them (and often screenshot them to Instagram).

Can I customize point rules, match length, or tiebreakers?

Yes. Match periods, break times, points-per-win, points-per-draw, and tiebreaker order are all configurable per tournament. Set it once at tournament creation and the rest is automatic.

Branding & customization

Can I use my club’s logo and colors?

Yes, on every plan. Upload your tournament logo, primary color, accent color, and optional hero image. Every public page — including the TV display — uses your branding. Custom CSS is supported on paid plans for advanced customization.

Can I embed OpenMatchDay on my club website?

Yes. Every tournament supports iframe embedding on a domain of your choice. Copy the embed code from the tournament settings and paste it as the index.html of your club page — live scores and standings appear inside your site without any coding.

What languages are supported?

The entire platform is available in 7 languages: English, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish, German, and Spanish. Admins and spectators switch language independently at any time — your tournament can serve local parents and international visitors from the same link.

Pricing, plans & data

Can I pay monthly instead of annually?

Not currently. Our plans are annual or one-off (Launch Pass). Annual works out cheaper per tournament than most monthly alternatives, and the Launch Pass gives you a pay-once, no-subscription option for single events.

What happens when my tournament ends?

Completed tournaments stay accessible with full results, standings, and statistics — indefinitely. Champion history, top scorers, and match data are kept; nothing disappears. Completed tournaments still count against your plan’s tournament quota for the current 12-month term (see next FAQ).

How does the tournament count work? Can I run a new one after the first finishes?

Each plan includes a fixed number of tournaments per 12-month term: Launch Pass = 1, Club = 6, League = 15, Federation = 50. Launch Pass is a single-event pass (1 tournament per purchase).

Tournaments count from the moment you activate them, whether you run them in parallel or one at a time. Completing, archiving, or deleting a tournament does not free up a slot. If you’re on Club and you’ve used all 6, you either wait for renewal (your 12-month term starts over) or upgrade to League or Federation.

Draft tournaments (wizard setups you never published) do not count. Explore the wizard freely — only activating a real tournament counts against your quota.

Can I use all my tournaments in the first 3 months of the year?

Yes — use them whenever you want. There’s no monthly pacing, no rolling window, no “one per month” rule. Your plan gives you a fixed number of tournaments per 12-month term, and you can consume them however suits your schedule:

  • All 6 (or 15 or 50) in one intense summer month? Go ahead.
  • One per month spread evenly across the year? Fine.
  • 5 in spring, 1 saved for a late-autumn cup? Perfect.
  • All at once, running in parallel across multiple venues? That’s fine too.

The only two rules are: (1) tournaments count from activation and don’t free up when they finish, and (2) you can’t exceed your plan’s total in the 12-month term.

What if I need more than 50 tournaments per year, or want white-label with SLA?

That’s our Enterprise tier — custom caps, multi-year pricing, reseller/partner terms, SLA, and integration support. Contact hello@openmatchday.com and we’ll scope it with you. Typical Enterprise customers are federations with regional affiliates, sport-media brands, and multi-country organizers.

Do you have a launch promo?

Yes — for summer 2026 we’re offering 25% off all plans with code SUMMER26, valid until 30 June 2026. Apply it at Stripe checkout. First-come first-served early-customer programs may follow — subscribe or check back.

What if I make a typo and want to start my Launch Pass over?

Email hello@openmatchday.com and we’ll reset your term manually — if the original tournament never had a match played. We don’t automatically allow do-overs because that would enable a single-event pass to become unlimited serial tournaments. A real event ≈ a real slot.

Can I export my data if I leave?

Yes. Tournament admins can export standings, matches, and scorer data as CSV from the admin panel. For full account deletion, we process GDPR data-export and deletion requests within 30 days.

Do you offer refunds?

The 14-day free trial is our refund policy — test everything before paying. Once a paid plan is active, we handle refund requests case-by-case; email hello@openmatchday.com and we’ll work with you.
